The annual conference of the Syrian Arab Handball Federation, held today Sunday in the conference hall of the Ministry of Sports and Youth in Damascus, focused on developing the sport through launching new tournaments for men and women, providing training halls, and organizing courses to qualify referees and develop coaches.
The Federation revealed its intention to host international tournaments in Syria as part of next season's plan, within the framework of efforts to develop the sport and enhance its presence at the international level. The Deputy Minister of Sports and Youth, Jamal al-Sharif, emphasized the necessity of joint work to build a sports environment befitting Syrian handball, pointing out the efforts made by the Ministry to develop the sport, which enjoys widespread popularity.
For his part, advisor to the Minister of Sports and Youth, Rami Sabi, noted that the attendance at the conference reflects the importance of the sport and the commitment to its development, noting that handball is one of the fastest-developing sports and is expected to reach world championships at a faster pace than other sports.
President of the Syrian Arab Handball Federation, Rafe' Bajbuj, clarified that the Federation worked during the past season to prepare the sport's cadres, especially in organizational and refereeing aspects, by attracting Arab experts with a track record in this field, while simultaneously expanding interest in local competitions. Several conference members called for attention to providing training process requirements, especially securing suitable halls, to ensure the qualification of grassroots and age groups, particularly given the interest some clubs show in playing the sport.
In addition to approved tournaments, the past season saw the organization of quality tournaments and qualifying courses, including the Hope Tournament and the Liberation Tournament for women, alongside a course to qualify sport cadres, where Egyptian referee Ahmed Jabir Marghni was attracted to contribute to developing the level of local referees.
