Fierce competition at the 'Palladium'
The London Palladium theatre in the English capital will host the annual France Football magazine ceremony on Monday to announce the winner of the Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player. The theatre's 2,286 seats are booked for the brightest names in world football, with global media focus on a fierce race between two stars, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal, after the evaluation period was set between August 3, 2025, and July 19, 2026.
Kane's numbers and team challenges
Harry Kane, striker for Bayern Munich and the England national team, is one of the contenders, having won the Golden Boot as the top scorer in European leagues for the 2025-2026 season, scoring 73 goals in all competitions. Kane scored 14 goals in the Champions League with two key assists, bringing his total European goal contributions to 16, and also scored 6 goals for his national team at the World Cup finals. Despite winning the domestic treble in Germany, his single goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup is considered a negative point compared to his teammate Jude Bellingham.
Yamal's performance and team differences
Lamine Yamal, star of Barcelona and the Spanish national team, is the second contender in the race, recording 45 goal contributions during the 2025-2026 season, which saw him win domestic league and super cup titles, and reach the podium with his national team at the World Cup. Yamal won the award for best playmaker in the Spanish league, and recorded 10 contributions in the Champions League, but his limited individual impact at the World Cup and his single goal contribution remain obstacles for him.
Other competitors and season updates
Other names such as Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Michael Olise are competing, where Mbappé shined individually with Real Madrid but lacked team titles, while Messi combined titles for top scorer and best playmaker in the American league. Michael Olise also stood out with impressive performances for Bayern Munich, while the winners of the past two years, Rodri and Ousmane Dembélé, are among the candidates. The list also includes Erling Haaland, Declan Rice, and Fabián Ruiz, as well as players from the Saudi league, Julian Koni and Sadio Mané.
