Englishman Harry Kane, player of German club Bayern Munich, broke into the list of the oldest players to win the Ballon d'Or for the first time, after securing the award on Monday at the age of 33 years, 2 months, and 28 days. This makes him one of the four oldest players to achieve this award for the first time, surpassing Croatian Luka Modrić and Italian Fabio Cannavaro by a few days.
Englishman Stanley Matthews tops the list, having won the first edition in 1956 at the age of 41, remaining the oldest player to win it for the first time. He is followed by Frenchman Karim Benzema, who received the award in 2022 at the age of 34 years and nine months, then Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin, winner of the 1963 edition at the age of 34 years and one month.
Harry Kane comes in fourth place at the age of 33 years, 2 months, and 28 days, ahead of Modrić, who won the award in 2018 at the age of 33 years, 2 months, and 24 days, then Cannavaro, who received it in 2006 at the age of 33 years, 2 months, and 14 days. The list also includes Czechoslovak Josef Masopust, who won the award in 1962 at the age of 31 years and 10 months.
The list also includes Spaniard Alfredo Di Stéfano, who won for the first time in 1957 at the age of 31 years and five months, and Czech Pavel Nedvěd, who won the award in 2003 at the age of 31 years and three months. German Lothar Matthäus completes the top ten, having won it in 1990 at the age of 29 years and nine months. The Ballon d'Or dates back to 1956 when it was launched by the French magazine France Football to honor the best European football player at the time.
Meanwhile, the award has expanded over the years to become one of the most prominent individual honors in the sport. These awards have been given to players who achieved outstanding individual accomplishments during their football careers.
