The Hazime Municipality Council in northern Raqqa countryside issued a decision imposing financial fines on violators who throw waste in streets and public places or cause water wastage, as part of efforts to curb the spread of illegal dumps and maintain public hygiene, in response to residents' complaints.
Hazime Municipality Council Chairman Aymen Al-Hamoud told SANA on Wednesday that the decision will be implemented starting October 22, following an awareness period to inform residents of its content. Al-Hamoud noted that the municipality launched awareness campaigns through municipal police committees to educate residents on the importance of complying with the decision before penalties begin.
He added that implementation will be monitored through daily field rounds, alongside a dedicated hotline to receive citizens' complaints regarding illegal dumps, littering, and water wastage. Khaled Al-Abadi, a resident of Hazime, emphasized the importance of curbing illegal dumps and maintaining public hygiene, urging residents to cooperate with the municipality to protect the environment and public health.
Taha Al-Ghazi highlighted residents' struggles with drinking water shortages and the spread of illegal dumps, especially near residential areas, expressing support for the decision and calling on relevant provincial authorities to provide the municipality with necessary machinery and meet its needs. Ismail Al-Ayed stated that the decision contributes to environmental protection and limits the spread of animals and rodents resulting from waste accumulation, calling for everyone's compliance with regulations to curb these phenomena.
The town of Hazime is located approximately 21 kilometers from Raqqa city, on the international road connecting Raqqa and the Tel Abyad border crossing with Turkey. Residents face challenges in securing drinking water, which worsen during the summer. In June last year, the town witnessed campaigns spraying neighborhoods and streets to combat sandflies transmitting leishmaniasis and limit their spread.
