Health Minister: Syria transitions from emergency response to sustainable health recovery
Health Minister confirms Syria's shift from emergency response to sustainable health recovery via the 2026-2028 national strategy in Cairo.

Health Minister Musab Al-Ali confirmed that the ministry's efforts focus on consolidating the health transition through implementing the National Health Strategy for the period 2026-2028, and the gradual shift from addressing emergency needs to building a more integrated, sustainable, and resilient national health system.

Minister Al-Ali stressed in his speech during the session dedicated to presenting and discussing the annual report of the Regional Director for the period 2025/2026, within the proceedings of the 73rd session of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee in Cairo, the importance of measuring health progress, ensuring equity in access to health services, especially for the most vulnerable groups.

He added that strengthening investment in health information systems and national institutional capacities is crucial, and called for the development of a regional framework to support countries undergoing the transition from emergencies to recovery, and improving flexible and predictable financing mechanisms to ensure the continuity of health services and achieve sustainable health development goals led by the countries themselves.

The annual report reviews the progress made in the health field at the regional level, ongoing challenges, and the organization's efforts in cooperation with member states during the past year, helping to identify priorities and areas that require accelerating the pace of action.

For its part, the 73rd session of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee began yesterday in Cairo on Tuesday, with Syria's participation, under the slogan "Together for a healthier future: Action, Access, and Equity," and will discuss over three days the most prominent health challenges in the region, exploring ways to strengthen health systems, ensure the sustainability of health services and care, and expand the scope of universal health coverage.
