Heritage Evening in Damascus Evokes Aramaic Language and Syrian Heritage Songs
The Syriac Cultural Association organized a heritage evening in Old Damascus to revive the Aramaic language and Syrian heritage songs.

The headquarters of the Syriac Cultural Association in Old Damascus hosted, on Friday, a traditional poetic and musical evening, where the melodies of "Dalkhona" and "Rozna," intertwined with the Aramaic language, came from the mountains of Maaloula and Bqaa, presenting a vivid picture of Syria's rich and ancient cultural heritage.

The evening saw a notable presence of creators and art and poetry enthusiasts, in a move aimed at preserving linguistic and civilizational diversity in the country after decades of marginalization. The event included a selection of poems and oral traditions in the Aramaic language, addressing social and human issues reflecting lifestyles in the Damascus countryside.

In the same context, Rosey Azqoul, the administrative official of the Syriac Cultural Association in Damascus, clarified that preparations for the evening took a month of field communication with young people interested in heritage in Bqaa, with the aim of safeguarding the Aramaic and Syriac languages as essential components of Syrian identity.

For her part, poet Rania Tajra from Maaloula expressed her pride in presenting poems in the Aramaic language spoken by her ancestors, emphasizing the importance of passing this living language to children and teaching it at home to ensure its continuity and protect it from extinction.

Ahmed Issa pointed out that the event sheds light on local communities that continue to preserve the Aramaic language in Maaloula, Bqaa, and Al-Sarkha, despite the challenges and changes threatening its continuity.

It is worth noting that the Syriac Cultural Association in Syria is concerned with preserving and archiving Syriac heritage and the Aramaic language, organizing intellectual seminars, art exhibitions, and free educational courses for children, with the aim of enhancing the presence of this cultural heritage and transmitting it to future generations.
