Local associations and initiatives in Homs have transformed used materials and simple waste into artistic products and usable handicrafts, as part of the eco-friendly products market organized by the Directorate of Environment in the governorate, within the framework of the 2026 National Environmental Day events.
The market, held in the Culture Directorate hall, with the participation of special education institutes and civil entities, under the slogan "From our environment and for it," aims to introduce eco-friendly products, encourage the reuse of materials and reduce waste, alongside supporting community initiatives and providing associations with the opportunity to display their production and interact with the public.
Lara Ghaoui from the Homs Directorate of Environment clarified in a statement to SANA correspondent on Monday that the market, which started yesterday and concludes its activities today, is part of the environmental activities program prepared by the Directorate in celebration of National Environmental Day, and includes afforestation and cleaning campaigns and awareness activities throughout the week of events.
For her part, Fadia Hanna from the Special Education Institute for Intellectual Disability noted that the market featured artistic works and handicrafts completed by institute members, with the participation of students with intellectual, hearing, and cerebral p disabilities, pointing out that the products rely on repurposing available materials, including food scraps, stones, wooden sticks, and plastic, transforming them into artistic pieces and useful tools.
Market visitor Naima Ahmed added that she purchased several pieces to support the associations and participants and encourage them to continue production, considering these products as alternative options to some plastic products, and calling on everyone to visit the market and benefit from the exhibits.
National Environmental Day coincides with November 1st every year, aiming to enhance community awareness and responsibility towards protecting natural resources, reducing pollution, and increasing green spaces, through the concerted efforts of institutions, individuals, and the local community to achieve a clean and sustainable environment.
