The Yemen Center for Information and Human Rights Rehabilitation warned on Tuesday of the worsening humanitarian situation in the city of Taiz, due to the blockade imposed by the Houthi militia on the city. The center documented indicators of attacks on food and medicine supplies and vital facilities, warning of escalating risks threatening civilian lives amid a severe shortage of basic needs.
For its part, the statement clarified that the intensification of shelling and attempts to encircle the city from several directions are doubling the risks facing the population, amid fears of the expansion of military operations and their catastrophic repercussions. The center pointed out that the city of Taiz has witnessed serious violations since 2015, including repeated shelling of residential neighborhoods and attacks on civilians and vital facilities, which exacerbated the suffering of the population and deprived them of regular access to basic services.
The center stressed that the continuation of the blockade for many years has turned the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians into daily suffering, under the continuous threat to their right to life, security, and healthcare. It called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights and humanitarian organizations to take urgent measures to stop violations and protect civilians, and to ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
In the same context, the center emphasized that the deliberate targeting of civilians and health and educational facilities, along with the indiscriminate shelling of residential areas, constitutes war crimes and serious violations of international humanitarian law. It called for international investigations into the documented violations and for those responsible to be held accountable, stressing the necessity of ensuring they do not escape punishment.
The Houthi militia continues to target civilians in Yemen, where five Yemenis were killed and 17 others were injured during the past 24 hours as a result of attacks and shelling carried out by the militia on the city of Taiz and its countryside in the southwest of the country.
