A ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia entered into effect early Tuesday in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky, aiming to enable the entry of humanitarian aid into the city controlled by Russian forces. Despite this halt in firing in the specific sector, shelling operations have not ceased in other areas of the conflict zone.
The Russian Ministry of Defense clarified via its Telegram channel that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation halted firing as part of preparations for a humanitarian operation in the Oleshky area of the Kherson region. For his part, Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets explained that this ceasefire is part of a humanitarian mission in which the Ukrainian commission cooperates with Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, under American mediation and coordination.
The ceasefire aims to alleviate the suffering of residents trapped in Oleshky for weeks, who are suffering from a severe shortage of food and medicine. Melania, wife of US President Donald Trump, announced last Friday that the ceasefire aims to facilitate the delivery of aid, while Russia confirmed its readiness to conclude similar ceasefires, praising the efforts of American negotiators.
The duration of the ceasefire was not clearly specified, but Russian officials indicated it might last a few days. The city faces a continuous threat from explosive drones of both sides, in addition to the roads leading to it being mined, which complicates the task of delivering relief to the residents.
