Hundreds of families in camps in northern Idlib remain unable to return to their towns due to the destruction of their homes and the high cost of repairs, alongside ongoing needs for shelter, heating, and basic services.
Ahmed Al-Sweid, director of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah camp in rural Idlib, told a SANA correspondent on Monday that most families who returned to their towns managed to rebuild or repair their homes, while those whose homes were completely destroyed and lack the financial means to return remain displaced.
Al-Sweid noted that a large number of families still reside in the camp, despite many having returned to their areas; currently, about 1,000 families remain out of the 1,700 who previously lived there, with most lacking resources to repair their homes or secure alternative housing.
For his part, Muhammad Firas Al-Sheikh, from Kafr Nabl and a resident of Barisha camp for six years, stated that the destruction of his home still prevents his return due to his inability to afford repairs, pointing out the reduction in aid previously provided by organizations.
Similarly, Jamil Al-Sweid, also from Kafr Nabl, said he cannot return because four homes belonging to him and his sons were destroyed by shelling from the tyrannical regime, confirming he lacks the financial means to rebuild them, in addition to being injured during the war.
On her part, Ahlam Al-Rashid, Director of Social Affairs and Labor in Idlib, confirmed that the government’s plan to facilitate the voluntary and safe return of families to their towns continues, in coordination with international and local organizations and donor agencies.
Al-Rashid clarified that the number of families in Idlib camps has decreased significantly, and the number of camps has dropped from 1,145 to 631, emphasizing continued coordination with relevant parties and international cooperation to provide necessary support for families' return and stability.
Yesterday, Sunday, a voluntary return convoy comprising 220 families departed from displacement camps in northern Idlib province to their villages and towns in the provinces of Idlib, Hama, Homs, Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Latakia, Damascus, and rural Damascus.
