IAEA: Nuclear Energy Use to Triple by 2060
IAEA Director General predicts nuclear energy use will triple by 2060, driven by AI.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi revealed in an annual report to the UN General Assembly that nuclear energy use will triple by 2060.

The report, cited by the US news network US World Report, stated that nuclear energy use will be driven by the shift to electricity and AI-supported data centers, as well as tech companies seeking reliable, carbon-free energy.

Grossi noted that an increasing number of countries view nuclear energy as essential for improving their energy security, affirming that it is on par with solar energy and "safer than any other option."

Grossi emphasized that over 400 operational nuclear reactors in more than 30 countries produced about 10 percent of global electricity and a quarter of low-carbon electricity in 2025, pointing out that more than 60 new reactors are under construction and expectations for future nuclear capacity have risen significantly.

Nuclear energy is rapidly returning to the forefront of global discussions on energy security and the transition to low-emission sources, amid growing electricity demand resulting from the expansion of AI and large data centers.

In recent years, several countries have reconsidered their nuclear policies, either by extending the lifespan of existing reactors or launching new projects, considering nuclear energy a stable source of electricity that can support emission reduction goals and enhance supply security.
