Indonesian Foreign Minister Calls for Comprehensive Reform of the UN System
Indonesian FM urges UN overhaul to handle current and future challenges effectively.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Armanatha Nasir called on Tuesday for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations system to ensure its ability to address current and future challenges and preserve its pivotal role in tackling global issues.

Indonesian news agency Antara reported that Nasir, during a speech at an event commemorating United Nations Day in Jakarta, stated that establishing international standards and rules is no longer sufficient to guarantee the organization's continuity and effectiveness. He emphasized that the UN in the future should not be limited to formulating rules but must be capable of providing practical solutions to global problems.

The Indonesian minister noted that over the past eight decades, the UN has played a fundamental role in developing international standards in areas such as human rights, maritime law, and sustainable development. However, rapid transformations on the international scene require it to adapt to maintain its status and effectiveness.

He pointed out that artificial intelligence represents a clear example of emerging challenges, considering that existing international frameworks have not yet kept pace with the speed of technological developments. This lag could widen the gap between countries capable of influencing the trajectory of these technologies and those merely bearing their consequences.

He stressed the importance of involving developing countries and nations of the Global South in international negotiations regarding modern technologies and global issues, ensuring a more balanced and fair representation in the decision-making process, while reaffirming his country's commitment to international multilateralism.

The Indonesian call comes amid growing international demands for reforming the UN system and enhancing its effectiveness in facing transboundary challenges, including international conflicts, climate change, and rapid technological transformations, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence.

Many developing countries are also calling for expanded representation in international decision-making mechanisms to ensure a more inclusive, balanced multilateral system capable of responding to global changes.
