Inter Milan turned their deficit against visitors Fiorentina into a dramatic 2-1 victory, scoring two goals in stoppage time in the match played on Sunday at the "Giuseppe Meazza" stadium, as part of the eighth round of the Italian football league.
With this win, Inter Milan raised their tally to 22 points, reclaiming the top of the standings on goal difference ahead of Lazio, while Fiorentina's tally remained at 4 points in eighteenth place, after suffering their third consecutive defeat.
Thuram and Zielinski create the miracle
The Lombard team owes its victory to its French striker Marcus Thuram, who scored the equalizer in the first minute of stoppage time, before winning a penalty in the final minutes, which Polish player Piotr Zielinski converted into the winning goal.
Inter Milan imposed its attacking superiority on the course of the match and threatened the opponent's goal on several occasions, as their shots reached 33 compared to only 7 for Fiorentina, but the first half ended goalless.
Jimenez goal opens the scoring
In the second half, Fiorentina managed to open the scoring in the 65th minute through Spanish defender Alejandro Jimenez, who fired a powerful shot with his right foot from outside the penalty area, settling in the top right corner of the goal.
It seemed the visitors were on their way to achieving their second win in the competition this season, before Inter Milan managed to turn the tables during the added time of the match.
The final moments decide the battle
In the 90+1st minute, Thuram equalized for the home side with a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area, following a pass from his compatriot Andy Diouf, restoring hope to his team in snatching the three points.
Inter Milan continued its attacking pressure in the remaining time, until the referee awarded them a penalty after Thuram was fouled inside the penalty area by Spanish defender Victor Talaferro, with Zielinski successfully taking it in the 90+8th minute, granting his team a valuable victory in the final moments.
