Interior Ministry Warns of E-commerce Fraud Risks
Syria's Interior Ministry warns citizens of online fraud risks and urges verification of licenses and identities before financial transactions.

The Ministry of the Interior has warned of the risks of fraud associated with e-commerce, amid the rapid expansion in the use of communication means and digital technologies. The Ministry called on citizens to exercise caution and verify the entities they deal with before conducting any financial or commercial transactions online.

The Ministry clarified in a statement received by SANA today, Wednesday, that economic activity has come to rely heavily on e-commerce through global platforms that enable the execution of commercial and economic activities without the need for personal presence. It pointed out that these activities entail increasing risks due to the emergence of new patterns of deception and fraud that are difficult for specialized authorities to monitor.

Verifying the Existence of a Commercial License

The Ministry called on citizens to exercise caution and care before engaging in any such activity, and to verify the existence of a commercial license permitting the provision of investment or trading services. It stressed the necessity of verifying the availability of clear information about the company, its address, and its liability, and warned against being lured by attractive profits that require performing fake tasks.

Warning Against Suspicious Links

The Ministry warned against opening suspicious links or installing applications from unknown sources, emphasizing the importance of not sharing passwords, verification codes, or personal data with untrusted entities. It also drew attention to the necessity of verifying the beneficiary's identity when sending remittances via the "Sham Cash" application.

The Ministry affirmed that combating electronic fraud is a shared responsibility requiring the concerted efforts of public and private institutions, media, educational institutions, and all members of society. It noted that the Ministry seeks to spread a culture of awareness regarding the risks of digital commerce, drawing on its preventive role in crime prevention, and will provide various types of support and assistance to confront these fraudulent patterns.
