Member states of the "Alliance to Prevent Atrocities and Achieve Justice in Sudan" warned on Monday of the risk of widespread new violations in Sudan, emphasizing that the likelihood of new atrocities remains extremely high due to the ongoing conflict and increased use of drones.
Devastating levels in El Fasher
The joint statement, issued by Germany, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, France, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sierra Leone, Sweden, and the European Union, stated that violence in the city of El Fasher and its surroundings has reached devastating levels after months of siege and escalating attacks by the Rapid Support Forces.
The statement pointed out that civilians have been subjected to serious violations including massacres, killings, summary executions, torture, disappearances, forced recruitment, and arbitrary arrests, alongside widespread sexual and gender-based violence.
UK sanctions
For its part, the United Kingdom announced today the imposition of sanctions on military leaders suspected of involvement in sexual violence related to the conflict during the fall of El Fasher. The announcement of the Rapid Support Forces' complete control over the city, the largest in the Darfur region, on October 27, 2025, had sparked widespread fears of the actual partition of Sudan.
Humanitarian siege
The statement added that the Rapid Support Forces imposed a siege on El Fasher in May 2024, closing roads and preventing the arrival of goods and aid, which caused a severe humanitarian crisis and a major shortage of food, medicine, and fuel, before penetrating the city after months of continuous battles on its outskirts.
The "Alliance to Prevent Atrocities and Achieve Justice in Sudan" is an international diplomatic coalition established in late February last year, as an extension of the Sudan Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, aiming to mobilize international efforts to protect civilians and hold those responsible for violations of international humanitarian law accountable.
