Iraq and Saudi Arabia discuss enhancing security coordination on the border
Iraq and Saudi Arabia held talks to strengthen border security coordination and joint control amid regional challenges.

Iraqi and Saudi officials discussed on Thursday enhancing security coordination and tightening control over the shared border strip, within the framework of cooperation to face security challenges between the two countries.

This comes a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi held talks in Riyadh with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which covered regional developments and enhancing security coordination to face common challenges.

Al-Zaidi affirmed Iraq's firm stance "of not allowing its territory to be used as a launching pad for any attacks or acts that threaten the security of the Kingdom and regional countries."

Against the backdrop of the US-Israeli war on Iran since February last year, several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, said they were subjected to attacks launched from Iraq by armed groups loyal to Tehran.

The Iraqi Border Forces command announced in a statement carried by the official news agency "WAA" the holding of a periodic meeting between the command of Iraq's Fifth Border Region and the border guard commands in the Northern and Eastern regions of Saudi Arabia.

The statement clarified that the meeting addressed "ways to enhance coordination and mutual cooperation, contributing to tightening control over the border strip, consolidating security and stability, and facing security challenges."

The Iraqi side was chaired by the commander of the Fifth Border Region, Rahim Yunis Rahim, while the Saudi side was chaired by the commanders of the border guards of the Northern and Eastern regions, Falih bin Falah bin Hathaleen and Ali bin Abdullah al-Ahmari.

On August 27 last year, a Saudi security and military delegation discussed with Iraqi officials in Baghdad the enhancement of security cooperation, border control, and intensifying information exchange.

Also, Iraqi Border Forces commander Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab Sukkar, during a visit to Saudi Arabia in February last year, discussed with Saudi Deputy Interior Minister Abdulaziz bin Muhammad bin Ayaf the enhancement of coordination in border control and cooperation in the field of training.
