The General Authority for Ghab Management and Development, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), carried out maintenance and rehabilitation works for several irrigation channels in the Ghab Plain, aiming to improve the efficiency of the water system and enhance the delivery of irrigation water to agricultural lands.

The Director of the Irrigation and Drainage Directorate at the Authority, Engineer Hassan Mahfoud, stated in an interview with SANA on Wednesday that the works include the rehabilitation of channel (G2) within the Tel Al-Far Irrigation Center, through pouring and lining approximately 8,000 square meters and maintaining iron works, which contributes to re-irrigating about 9,000 hectares.

For his part, Mahfoud pointed out that the maintenance works for the box channel (G3) involve pouring and lining walls, floors, and sills, using approximately 50 cubic meters of reinforced concrete, thereby enabling the re-introduction of about 7,000 hectares into irrigation.

He added that maintenance works for channel (G4) cover an area of 9,000 square meters, along with the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Shari'a siphon, the execution of a bridge at the intersection of the main road in Bab Al-Karim Al-Erim, as well as the desilting of some main drains in the area, noting that the works target bringing more than 2,500 hectares back into service.

Mahfoud emphasized that the works aim to improve the efficiency of irrigation channels and return the largest possible area of agricultural land to service, noting that the current maintenance works are the first since the establishment of these channels.

The General Authority for Ghab Management and Development had previously carried out, in cooperation with the FAO, maintenance and rehabilitation works for irrigation channels (G1) and (G2) in March 2026, which included concrete works and desilting of earthen drains, aiming to improve the efficiency of the irrigation system and reduce water waste in the Ghab Plain.
