Israel rejects Lebanon's clause  in the US-Iran memorandum

A Lebanese man was killed and another was critically wounded, on Thursday, June 18, following a raid carried out by an Israeli drone that targeted a car at the Kafr Tbnit-Arnon roundabout in the Nabatieh district, in the first violation of the terms of the Iranian-American memorandum of understanding on ending the war in the region, which came into effect yesterday after it was signed electronically between the two countries.

According to field information and  local Lebanese  sources, intensive Israeli artillery shelling targeted the towns of Kafr Jawz, Kafr Rumman and Nabatieh al-Fouqa at dawn, in conjunction with airstrikes between the towns of Hadada and Haris.

Lebanese sources indicated that an Israeli drone threw a stun grenade amid a gathering of residents in the town of Beit Yahoun, which led to two injuries, amid the sound of a remarkable explosion of a suspicious object from the remnants of the aggression on the Dweir road, which caused a fire in the grass.

Occupation Losses

On the other hand, an Israeli soldier was killed and two officers, including the deputy commander of the 36th Division, as well as five other soldiers, were injured when an explosive device targeted them in the town of Taybeh in the Litani region of southern Lebanon.

The Israeli broadcaster Kan reported details of the incident, noting that injuries escalated in recent hours to one person killed and 11 wounded in the ranks of the invading forces.

Politically, Israel announced that it is not bound by the clause related to ending the war in Lebanon contained in the memorandum of understanding signed electronically between Washington and Tehran.

Axios quoted an adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as confirming that the latter explicitly told President Donald Trump that Israel would not withdraw from the areas it controls in the south unless Hezbollah was completely disarmed.

In the same context, the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz spoke of the disappointment of the Israeli security establishment with the way the war is approaching its end and Israel's absence from the international table that determines regional arrangements affecting its security.

Articles of agreement for Lebanon

Iran's official news agency IRNA revealed the text of the first paragraph of the memorandum of understanding concluded between Washington and Tehran, which explicitly stipulated that the two sides and their allies declared an immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, and committed to guaranteeing its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In this context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi assured Lebanese officials that the Israeli withdrawal clause will be an integral part of the 60-day negotiations related to the nuclear file in Washington, reflecting a full link between regional calm and security arrangements on the Lebanese border.

Lebanese sources said that the new Israeli escalation coincides with the entry into force of the electronic memorandum of understanding signed with Iran, and despite the explicit stipulation in the agreement on an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations against Lebanon, the Israeli  government's rebellion on the Lebanese part and its condition to disarm Hezbollah threaten to abort the regional truce, which puts Lebanon in front of a difficult labor and a stage of anticipation for the outcome of the fifth session of direct negotiations arranged in Washington on the demarcation of the border and the withdrawal to the "line" Yellow".

Aoun: The Lebanese state is the master of its decision

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stressed that the Lebanese state is the master of its own decision, and that it is in charge of the negotiation process itself, and that no one will be allowed to take its place.

Aoun announced a new round of direct negotiations expected next week under US auspices and with remarkable interest from the Trump administration.

For his part, Hizbullah Secretary-General Naim Qassem said in a recorded speech that the resistance has succeeded in breaking the "Greater Israel" project and protecting the Lebanese presence, reiterating the party's categorical rejection of any projects that include its disarmament, describing them as "an Israeli prescription that will not pass", calling on the political forces for an internal dialogue to arrange the situation away from external dictates.
