Israeli aggression in Hebron displaces 537 families and denies 80,000 access to education
Israeli siege in Hebron displaces 537 families and disrupts education for 80,000 students.

The General Union of Palestinian Teachers revealed the repercussions of the ongoing Israeli siege on the city of Hebron, which resulted in the displacement of 537 families and forced approximately 80,000 students to interrupt their education. This measure halted the enrollment process in schools in the Hebron Directorate, where 220 government, private, and UNRWA-affiliated educational institutions were affected during the past week.

In the same context, the Israeli military operation in Hebron began on October 23, following a shooting that resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers and injured three others. Since then, the Israeli army has imposed a closure on the city and surrounding villages, seized homes in the Jalqada and Ain Deir Baha neighborhoods, turning them into military barracks amidst forced displacement and the demolition of homes, commercial facilities, and infrastructure.

For his part, the Union pointed out that the Israeli army detained eleven teachers from the mixed "Janba" primary school in the Masfer Yata area, which halted the school's operations and left students waiting for their teachers. The Union stressed that closing roads and detaining teachers and students constitutes an assault on the right to education and on people's lives and dignity, noting that displaced persons lose their educational continuity and sense of security.

The Union added that displaced students in Hebron are losing their books, their place of study, and their sense of security, while teachers face difficulties preventing them from reaching their schools and performing their work. The Union called for an international union movement led by Education International (International Trade Union Confederation) and its member unions, which includes addressing governments, parliaments, and diplomatic missions, urging them to intervene and follow up on results, and sending a union and human rights delegation to Hebron and Masfer Yata to listen to those affected, document facts, and submit them to relevant international authorities.

The Union issued an appeal to education unions worldwide "to turn solidarity into pressure on decision-makers to open roads to schools, protect teachers and students, and guarantee their right to education and work with safety and dignity." The ongoing Israeli aggression on the city of Hebron, for the tenth consecutive day, caused the displacement and harm of more than 3,300 Palestinians, especially in the Jalqada and Ain Deir Baha areas, in addition to the demolition of 15 homes and facilities, damage to the economy and infrastructure, and disruption of the educational process.
