Israeli law regulates three attempts to form the government
Israeli law allows three attempts to form the government within 12 weeks before calling for new elections.

Stages of Mandate

The Israeli law allows three attempts to form governments after Knesset elections, within a period not exceeding 12 weeks from the date of the mandate, otherwise procedures leading to new elections begin. Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to begin consultations on Wednesday with representatives of the winning parties to determine the identity of the Knesset member he will mandate to form the government.

Time Limits

The first mandate holder is given a period of 28 days to form the government, with the possibility of extending it by an additional period not exceeding 14 days. In case the first attempt fails, the second mandate holder is given a period of 28 days without the possibility of obtaining an extension. The third attempt is granted to another mandate holder for only 14 days.

Political Scenarios

The Jewish opposition parties, which hold 48 seats, have announced their intention to request the mandate for Gadi Eisenkot, while Netanyahu's camp obtained 53 seats. If the Arab parties support Eisenkot, the number of supporters rises to 67 seats, enhancing his chances of being mandated without the President's decision being automatically settled.

Role of the President and Immunity

The Israeli President enjoys immunity while exercising his presidential duties, although judicial precedent has established the possibility of indirectly reviewing presidential acts. The President had previously announced his utmost efforts to prevent a return to new elections, explaining this as an attempt to form a national unity government.
