Road and port closures
Truck drivers in Italy organized protests on Monday evening against rising fuel prices, blocking road and port entrances in southern regions with their trucks. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the protests began in Sicily and spread to other southern areas due to fuel price hikes.
Distribution impacts
The agency noted that protests extended to Calabria, Basilicata, Apulia, and Campania, slowing the distribution of goods to some supermarkets. The drivers' road closures caused traffic congestion at several points, particularly on the A1 highway.
Specific locations
In the cities of Naples and Caserta in the Campania region, drivers blocked the southern exit of Caserta on the A1 highway, as well as the Santa Maria Capua Vetere exit and the entrance to the Port of Naples, using their trucks to protest fuel prices reaching approximately 2.30 euros per liter.
Warnings of shortages
For its part, the Italian consumer rights association Codacons warned in a Monday statement of facing dual risks. The association stated that basic materials, especially food products on supermarket shelves, could face shortages in the coming hours, in addition to the risk of illegal profits along the supply chain. It is worth noting that several European countries, notably France and Belgium, are currently witnessing widespread demonstrations accompanied by violence due to high product prices and rising fuel costs.
