Jordanian King Abdullah II, on Wednesday, reaffirmed his rejection of the displacement of Palestinians and the expansion of Israeli settlements, during talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the capital Canberra. The King called for comprehensive regional de-escalation and an end to Israeli aggression in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem, warning of the extension of its repercussions to the region.
The joint statement issued by the Australian Prime Minister's office confirmed the rejection by both sides of annexing the West Bank and displacing Palestinians, and condemned the Israeli settlement project known as "E1" as a violation of international law. The two countries stressed their commitment to the two-state solution and preserving the status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, with Australia affirming the importance of Hashemite custodianship over them.
For his part, the King and the Australian President expressed their concern regarding tensions in the Middle East, and strongly condemned Iranian attacks targeting Jordan, with Australia expressing solidarity with the Kingdom. Both sides also renewed their support for the unity and stability of Syria, and support for Lebanon in strengthening its sovereignty and restricting weapons to the state, along with condemning Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
In bilateral relations, both sides agreed to enhance defense and security cooperation through strategic dialogue and military exchanges, as well as encouraging trade and investment in natural resources, water security, and sustainable agriculture. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on mental health cooperation, while Aqaba will host a meeting in 2027 under King Abdullah II's initiative to combat online extremism.
