Jordan's King Abdullah II departed on Thursday for an official visit to Kazakhstan, where he will co-chair a new round of the "Aqaba Meetings" initiative on artificial intelligence security with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
The Royal Court stated in a statement that the King will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart in the capital Astana, with the participation of country leaders and international officials. The statement did not include additional details regarding the agenda.
Bilateral talks and economic cooperation
For his part, spokesperson for the Kazakh presidency Aibek Smadiyar announced that the visit will last for Thursday and Friday, with Astana hosting the initiative's meetings on the final day. He clarified that the bilateral talks will focus on expanding trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two countries, alongside strengthening cultural relations and people-to-people ties.
History of the initiative and recent developments
He noted that King Abdullah II launched the "Aqaba Meetings" initiative in 2015 to enhance cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism. Its rounds have been held in Jordan and several other countries, including Britain, Spain, Indonesia, Italy, Brazil, Bulgaria, and the United States.
Last October, during the King's visit to Australia, he welcomed Australia's interest in hosting a meeting under the initiative in 2027, focusing on combating online extremism and the misuse of emerging technologies.
