South Korean artist Jimin Lee has transformed pieces of bread into artistic sculptures made of wire and fabric, in an artistic experience that draws inspiration from the details of daily life and personal memories, re-presenting the familiar edible in an artistic form that retains its external features but abandons its original function.
CNN Arabic reported on October 14 that Lee is working on an art project called "FAKERY," which involves creating a virtual bakery where sculptures of bread are displayed instead of real products, using wire and textiles to shape models that mimic the shapes and different types of bread.
The idea for the project began to take shape at the end of last year, when the artist started executing a series of bread sculptures, before the idea expanded to include a complete art exhibition, transforming a material associated with food, smell, and warmth into works that greatly stimulate the viewer's imagination.
Lee says that her choice of bread is linked to her personal memories, especially the smell of fresh bread that her mother used to prepare to welcome guests at home, as it became associated with meanings of happiness, welcome, and familiarity, prompting her to use it as a primary artistic element.
The artist relies on wire to draw external lines and define shapes when executing her sculptures, while using fabrics to highlight details, leaving some parts empty, which gives the works a different appearance from traditional sculptures and allows viewers to imagine their components.
Lee aims through her works to combine the simulation of familiar things with reimagining them; in some sculptures, she retains the features of bread, allowing it to be easily recognized, while giving other works an imaginative character that reinterprets the original form from a specific artistic perspective.
The artist intends to continue working on the bread series and explore new shapes and types, in an experience that links simple artistic materials with personal memory, and re-examines the details of daily life through art.
Jimin Lee's experience offers a model for transforming familiar things into artistic works that evoke memories of home and hospitality, giving viewers the opportunity to discover new meanings in the details of daily life.
