Lapid: Netanyahu government turned Israel's security into a farce
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid attacks Netanyahu's government, accusing it of turning security into a farce.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid launched a sharp attack on Benjamin Netanyahu's government on Thursday, accusing it of turning Israel's security into a "farce." This came in response to Defense Minister Israel Katz holding opposition leaders responsible for any future attacks on the country.

Lapid's attack came in a post on the American platform "X," following Katz's statements in which he accused opposition leaders of casting doubt on government warnings of potential attacks on Israel in conjunction with the elections scheduled for next Tuesday. Lapid said: "The reckless and hysterical statement made by the Defense Minister is a gift to Israel's enemies."

For his part, Lapid added: "Once again, this failed government is trying to fabricate excuses and look for a scapegoat to cover up Netanyahu's failures and the group of incompetent people surrounding him." He continued: "They failed to eliminate Hamas, failed to overthrow the Iranian regime, failed to eliminate Hezbollah, and also failed on the international stage, and now they are blaming the opposition."

Lapid considered Katz's statements to be an "open admission of their complete inability to manage the country and provide security for its citizens." He added: "In their desperate attempt to avoid defeat at the ballot boxes, they are turning the security of the State of Israel into a farce." He warned that "if they remain in power, we will witness more October 7 events, more incidents like the Fly Dubai incident, as well as greater reinforcement of Iran's influence."

Earlier on Thursday, Katz held opposition leaders responsible for "any attack on Israel, and for every future terrorist act." Katz said: "These attacks will be recorded under the names of Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett, Yair Golan, and other members of the opposition." He accused opposition leaders of attacking him and Netanyahu and casting doubt on their assessments and security warnings, which he said were based on information regarding the intentions of hostile entities to attack Israel and carry out operations on the eve of or during the elections, with the aim of influencing their results.

These statements come amid a state of uncertainty regarding the Israeli elections scheduled for next Tuesday, amid repeated government warnings of potential attacks by Iran on Israel, or potential Israeli attacks against Iran, prior to the voting date.
