Launch of Emergency Preparedness Enhancement Project in Syria with European Support
A 24-month project to enhance emergency preparedness in Syria targets 165,000 beneficiaries with EU and international organization support.

The Ministry of Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management launched today, Sunday, the "Enhancing Emergency Preparedness and Response in Syria" project in partnership with specialized international organizations and with support from the European Union. The project aims to develop an early warning system, enhance disaster readiness, and consolidate proactive work at the national level.

The project spans 24 months and directly targets more than 165,000 beneficiaries, including displaced persons, returnees, and the most vulnerable groups, alongside ministry staff and volunteers from partner institutions. The project is implemented in all governorates, with a field focus on Aleppo, Al-Hasakah, Idlib, and Daraa.

Deputy Minister of Emergency Affairs Ahmed Aqiz emphasized that the project marks the beginning of larger initiatives aimed at building a comprehensive disaster risk reduction system. He highlighted the necessity of integrating risk reduction strategies with recovery plans, food security, and water initiatives as a cross-sectoral effort.

For his part, FAO representative Perio Tommaso Peri announced that the project aims to lay the foundation for a sustainable national capacity to anticipate crises. He noted that years of displacement interacted with drought, floods, and forest fires, placing an additional burden on families.

EU Commission representative Amin Qalbaghyan explained that establishing a government-led national coordination platform provides the fundamental basis for decision-making. He affirmed that the project lays the cornerstone for sustainable risk governance and meets not only urgent humanitarian needs.
