Firefighting teams at Damascus International Airport extinguished a limited fire that broke out on the roof of the under-construction Terminal 2 on Friday, with no human casualties recorded and no impact on air traffic or operational procedures at the airport.

The General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport stated in a statement that the fire broke out around 3:30 PM, and the airport's firefighting and ambulance teams responded immediately, managing to extinguish it in record time and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the site.

Determining the causes and circumstances of the fire

The Authority added that its Chairman, Omar Al-Husri, accompanied by several managers of relevant departments, inspected the fire site, reviewed the damages and measures taken, and ordered an investigation to determine the causes and circumstances of the fire and to take necessary actions based on the results.

The Authority noted that initial data indicate the fire was caused by an accidental technical fault that occurred during the execution of roof insulation works for the new building. The damages were limited to material aspects, with no impact on air traffic or operational procedures at the airport, which continued normally and regularly.

The Authority confirmed the continuation of technical procedures and necessary investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident and assess the damages, emphasizing that airport safety and the continuity of its operational processes are its top priorities. Relevant authorities are following up on completing necessary procedures and assessing damages, with any updates to be announced as they become available.

It is worth noting that the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport continues to implement development projects for Damascus International Airport, aiming to enhance its operational readiness and improve services provided to passengers.
