The French football club Lyon announced on Wednesday the departure of its Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca to join his Portuguese counterpart Sporting, for a financial compensation of $5.6 million. This decision came after the coach agreed to the offer from the Portuguese club, which he described as the club that supported him in his childhood.
Sports Management Reactions
Matieu Lo-Jean, the sporting director of Lyon, described the decision as heartfelt for Fonseca, noting that he received the offer last week and accepted it. Lo-Jean added that he did not expect this development, but quickly realized the difficulty of keeping the coach despite his will, especially after feeling that Fonseca was not fully committed at 100% to the club's sporting project.
The sporting director pointed out the necessity of protecting the institution on both sporting and financial levels, confirming that the club quickly began searching for a coach who adopts the same playing principles to ensure continuity and avoid starting from scratch. A list of coaches who can adapt to the club's football identity had previously been prepared.
Current Team Status
Fonseca, aged 53, took over at Lyon on January 31, 2025, succeeding Pierre Sags, and his contract was set to run until June 30, 2027. The team currently sits third in the league with 17 points, three points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain after nine matches, and is also participating in the Europa League.
Temporary Leadership
Fonseca's compatriot Jorge Massil, aged 41 and a member of the assistant coaching staff, has taken charge of the team for the upcoming matches against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, followed by a match against Brest in the French league. The name of the new coach is expected to be announced at the start of the international break.
