Seizing the Lead
Olympique Lyon snatched a thrilling 2-1 victory away against Nice on Sunday at the Groupama Stadium, in the seventh round of the French football league, to ascend to the top of the standings.
Lyon quickly regained its balance after its loss to Lens in the previous round, raising its tally to 14 points and taking the lead on goal difference ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, while Nice remained stuck at 8 points in thirteenth place.
Quick Goals
Nice started the match strongly and managed to open the scoring in the 18th minute through Ivorian Eli Wahi, who exploited an organized attack finished with a shot from inside the penalty area, taking advantage of a cross from Jonathan Clauss.
But the home side quickly regained their composure and equalized in the 32nd minute through Czech Pavel Šulc, before American Tanner Tessmann added a second goal in the 36th minute, turning Lyon's deficit into a lead within four minutes.
Red Card and Delay
In the second half, Lyon suffered a heavy blow after being forced to complete the match with ten players, following the direct red card shown to Japanese player Kaito Nakamura in the 70th minute for a violent challenge against Egyptian Mohamed Abdelmonem, a Nice defender.
Nice exploited the numerical disadvantage of its opponent and pressed in the final minutes in search of an equalizer, with Eli Wahi managing to hit the net again in the 90+3rd minute, after a cross from Algerian Mohamed Amine Oumrani.
Goal Disallowed
The match was paused for three minutes after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology intervened to review the goal, with the referee ultimately disallowing it due to an offside position by the Ivorian player, allowing Lyon to maintain its lead and secure three valuable points.
