French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country is in urgent need of order and calm, pointing out that governors may take decisions to ban some protests to protect cities from acts of violence. This came in a speech Macron addressed to the nation from the Elysee Palace in the capital Paris, following the "Yellow Vests" demonstrations that took place in the country.
In the same context, the French president pointed out that marginal groups from the far-left and criminals caused uncontrolled acts of violence in several cities, leading to the looting of shops and attacks on public buildings and municipalities. He called on political parties and trade unions to condemn these acts in clear and decisive terms, emphasizing that France does not need to escalate tensions.
For his part, Macron promised the government to provide support to affected shop owners starting from Monday, where Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu will chair a crisis meeting. He also announced that Lecornu will meet with representatives of political parties, unions, and students to draw lessons and ensure that such events are not repeated, stressing the need to hold accountable those who destroy property.
Macron added that he understands the protesters' concerns about the high cost of living and rising fuel prices, considering that the roots of these concerns partly stem from the war resulting from American-Israeli attacks on Iran. He affirmed his commitment to dialogue and his rejection of violence, while noting that France will prepare for good presidential elections in six months.
