Macron Rejects French Interior Minister’s Resignation Despite Admitting Failures
French president rejects Nunez's resignation, tasks him with exposing intelligence failures after violent protests.

French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, despite the latter’s admission of failures in anticipation and intelligence gathering regarding the violence that occurred during protests against the cost of living late last week.

Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted a source at the Elysee Palace as saying that the Interior Minister submitted his resignation to the President on Sunday, but the latter rejected it due to the need for continuity in leading security forces under current circumstances.

In the same context, the source added that the President tasked the Interior Minister with taking all necessary measures to transparently expose the failures that led to the outbreak of violence, and to establish new working methods for internal security forces as soon as possible to confront saboteurs.

For his part, Nunez, who has held his position for only one year, admitted that the police lost control in some cities during the violence, noting there were gaps in anticipating events, and clarified that he submitted his resignation because he felt responsible for what happened.

Nunez pointed out that 350 people were arrested on Sunday and during the night in Paris in connection with the violence. French authorities are seeking to contain the anger stemming from protests that turned into unprecedented violence, resulting in the arrest of approximately 2,400 people and injuring nearly 1,000 security force members.

French efforts to contain concerns arising from the management of protests continue, amid ongoing investigations into the causes of the security chaos witnessed by the country.
