At Al-Wiam Association for Blind Women, Mariam Al-Ghurani, who suffers from deafness, speech impairment, and poor vision, found her path to the world through learning the craft of crochet. She was met by trainer Ghada Rajab about three years ago, where she began an educational journey relying on touch and gestures instead of words or clear vision.
In this context, Ghada used a special training method focused on enhancing reliance on touch and memory, covering Mariam's limited field of vision to ensure she did not depend on it. Ghada traces shapes on Mariam's palm, which captures the gesture and transforms it with her threads into real pieces, repeating attempts until Mariam masters the stitches.
For her part, Mariam showed a refined taste in choosing colors, preferring lighter ones that express her love for flowers and nature. She began her journey with a hat and scarf, then expanded her skills to include participating in exhibitions and considering learning perfume making and computer skills, thereby broadening her horizons of independence.
Mariam's mother, Mervat Bashir Abu Azzan, added that her daughter's joining the association changed the rhythm of her life from isolation to social participation. Mariam now participates in household chores and waters flowers, reflecting her transformation towards a more interactive and independent life, emphasizing that the association has become a space for self-expression.
She noted that Mariam's first piece was a treasure proving her ability to achieve, and called on parents not to leave their children in isolation. Today, Mariam expresses her feelings and desires in her own way, achieving a tangible accomplishment that transcends the boundaries of craft to a life full of participation.
Ghada summarizes Mariam's success as a rare success story, characterized by sensitivity, spontaneity, and activity. The thread between Mariam's fingers turned into a story of success, where the hand became a language of communication, and success became an achievement that can be touched, after the journey began in isolation and found its path through two palms that met.
