Spanish Ducati rider Marc Marquez strengthened his lead in the MotoGP World Championship standings after finishing second in the speed race at the Malaysian Grand Prix, held on Saturday. The result came behind his compatriot Pedro Acosta, while direct title rival Jorge Martin missed the race due to injury.
Race Details
Acosta crossed the finish line with a time of 20 minutes and 04.098 seconds, beating Marquez by 0.578 seconds to take second place. Italian Marco Bezzecchi managed to secure third place after a fierce battle in the final stages at the Sepang circuit. Marquez also survived a dangerous moment at the start of the race when he nearly collided with Japanese rider Ai Ogura at a sharp corner.
Reactions and Analysis
Marquez revealed he did not enjoy the race, despite his comfortable position in the title fight with Martin, saying: "I didn't enjoy it at all. Today was real work, and we did what we had to do. It is a circuit where I have struggled in some years, but we are managing things well. I will be at the peak of my focus on Sunday." He noted that Martin's early withdrawal from the Sepang round dealt a strong blow to his chances of competing for the title, with only three races remaining after this round.
General Standings
Seven-time world champion Marquez widened the gap to 19 points over Martin, his closest challenger, who withdrew from the competition on Sunday morning after failing to recover from a wrist fracture. The main race of the Malaysian Grand Prix is scheduled to be held on Sunday.
