McLaren to Auction Five Historic Formula 1 Cars
McLaren announces the sale of five historic Formula 1 cars driven by its champions in an auction expected to generate tens of millions.

McLaren announced its intention to sell five cars that competed in the Formula 1 World Championship. These fully operational vehicles were driven by the team's champions, including Lewis Hamilton and the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna, and one was tested by actor Brad Pitt. The manufacturer's title holder will prepare these cars for sale through agent Tom Hartley Jr., a move expected to generate tens of millions of dollars.

A Rich History

The five cars cover 32 years of the team's history, starting with two MP4/6A models equipped with 12-cylinder Honda engines. These were driven by Austrian Gerhard Berger and tested by Senna during the 1991 season, which Senna won the championship in. The collection also includes a McLaren MP4/27 driven by 2009 World Champion Jenson Button and tested by seven-time World Champion Hamilton.

Recent Achievements

The collection is completed by two cars driven exclusively by current champion Lando Norris in 2021 and 2023. Norris drove the 2021 McLaren M35 to podium finishes in Imola, Monaco, and Monza, while the 2023 McLaren M37A-03 won two consecutive races in Singapore and Japan. It was later tested by Oscar Piastri and Mick Schumacher after the season.

Reasons for the Sale

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, said in a statement on Sunday: "We have decided to part with these iconic McLaren Formula 1 cars because we feel that leaving them in the warehouse unused is a disservice to what they represent." He added: "These cars were made to be driven and to race, and we want to see them used and enjoyed by people. We believe this is the best way to keep our history alive and our legacy active." Although prices have not been announced, their expected value ranges between 5 and 10 million pounds sterling.
