A medical team in the Neurosurgery Department at Raqqa National Hospital successfully performed the first specialized and complex surgical procedure since the department's establishment this year, on Saturday, for a female patient suffering from severe pain and numbness in her lower limbs, which limited her ability to walk more than 100 meters.
Ahmed Hamid Al-Abduli, head of the Neurosurgery Department at the hospital and supervisor of the procedure, explained that clinical and radiological examinations, particularly the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine, revealed severe stenosis of the spinal canal between the second and fifth lumbar vertebrae, accompanied by slippage between the fourth and fifth vertebrae.
Al-Abduli added that the medical team succeeded in stabilizing the lumbar vertebrae using metal implants and expanding the spinal canal to relieve compressed nerve roots, emphasizing that the success of this complex surgical intervention was the result of integrated efforts by a team comprising neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, resident doctors, as well as nursing and technical staff.
For his part, Al-Abduli addressed the difficulties facing medical staff in Raqqa, primarily the acute shortage of advanced surgical tools and the absence of a specialized surgical microscope, which often forces the hospital to refer critical cases to hospitals in Damascus.
The department head concluded his statement by appealing to relevant authorities to support Raqqa National Hospital and provide modern equipment, ensuring that staff can deliver the best healthcare to citizens and reduce the burden and hardship of travel for patients and their families.
It is worth noting that the Neurosurgery Department at Raqqa National Hospital was established on April 7, and includes a complete medical and nursing staff, comprising specialist doctors, residents, anesthesiology technicians, and nursing personnel.
