Meeting in Tartus to discuss regulating fish marketing and controlling traders' commissions
Tartus internal trade director discusses commission violations and the need for a joint committee to balance prices.

Abdul Wahhab Al-Safar, Director of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection in Latakia and Tartus, held talks with representatives of fisherfolk associations and traders in Tartus regarding the state of fishing, marketing obstacles, mechanisms to reduce operational costs, and price controls, particularly concerning the commission rate fixed for traders and its impact on marketing costs and selling prices.

Al-Safar stated in an interview with SANA correspondent on Thursday that fishermen expressed their objection to some traders exceeding the commission rate of 5 percent stipulated in the decision issued by Tartus Governorate, and called for adherence to it without imposing additional burdens on them. Meanwhile, traders pointed out that this rate does not cover the operational expenses they incur during marketing, transportation, and distribution processes.

Al-Safar noted that the meeting resulted in a proposal to submit a recommendation to Tartus Governorate to form a joint committee comprising representatives from the three fisherfolk associations, the markets of Tartus and Baniyas, alongside relevant public authorities, to study the objections from various aspects and reach a clear mechanism that balances the rights of fishermen and traders while considering marketing costs.

Al-Safar stressed the necessity of adhering to the Tartus Governorate's decision regarding the approved commission rate until the objections are studied and appropriate measures are taken. He emphasized the importance of regulating fish marketing movements to help curb violations, ensure fair dealings among all parties in the marketing process, and maintain price stability and the integrity of products offered in markets.

The fish marketing sector in Tartus Governorate faces economic and livelihood challenges, despite being an ancient traditional profession and a primary source of income for many families in coastal cities and Arwad Island.
