Michigan Tests Limits of US Politics.. Muslim on the Brink of the Senate
Muslim candidate Abdurahman Siddig competes in Michigan for a US Senate seat in an election that may be decided by swing voters.

Voters in the US state of Michigan head to the polls on Tuesday in one of the most prominent battlegrounds of the midterm elections, amid a race of special importance for the future balance of political forces in the US capital. Polling stations open at 07:00 local time (12:00 GMT) and close at 20:00 (01:00 Wednesday GMT).

Decisive Race for a Senate Seat

The Senate race stands out as one of the most important competitions, as its outcome concerns not only Michigan's political direction, but also the future balance of power in Washington. Muslim candidate of Egyptian origin Abdurahman Siddig, representing the Democrats, is competing against Republican Mike Rogers. The race is for the seat that will become vacant with the retirement of current Democratic Senator Gary Peters at the end of the year, making the victory important for Democrats' efforts to seize a majority in the Senate.

Historic if Siddig Wins

The importance of the competition between the candidates extends beyond its potential impact on political balances within the Senate; it also serves as an indicator of the state of political polarization within the United States. Rogers (63) defends the continuation of President Donald Trump's policies, while Siddig (42) represents the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and criticizes the Trump administration on several issues, including immigration policies, attacks on Iran, and support provided to Israel. The race in Michigan gains additional importance, as Siddig would become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate if he wins.

Polls and Details

Siddig won the Democratic Party primary on August 4 last year, despite the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spending $62 million in support of his opponent. Latest polls in the country show Siddig leading Rogers by a margin ranging between 2 and 3 percentage points, while the position of undecided voters, whose preferences do not appear in polls, is expected to be an influential factor in the result. According to open online sources, approximately 250,000 Muslims live in Michigan, constituting about 2.4 percent of the state's population.
