Citizens in the US state of Michigan celebrated the election of Abdurahman Mohamed, a Democrat of Egyptian descent, to the Senate, making him the first Muslim elected to the body. Residents of Detroit expressed their joy at the result, which reflects political and social diversity in the state.
In the same context, American Muslim voter Namiya stated that seeing a Muslim member in the Senate is extremely special to her, describing the victory as amazing. She emphasized the importance of candidates aligning with values believed by most Americans, adding that faith in justice and opposition to war do not require the candidate to be Muslim, but rather sufficient that they be a righteous and honest person.
For his part, voter (R.K.) expressed his happiness at Mohamed's victory, noting that seeing people of Black and dark skin belonging to minorities in the political sphere brings joy. He added: "This makes me, and my children, feel seen and heard, and that there is someone making decisions in line with the decisions we make".
Businessman Emad Mohamed, of Turkish and Lebanese descent, pointed out that Middle Eastern communities in the state went to the polls and brought about change. For his part, Ted Goodman, Communications Director for the Republican Party in Michigan, said the American people have spoken and accept the results, claiming the public will soon regret it.
According to initial unofficial results, the Democratic Party surpassed the Republican Party in the midterm elections, seizing majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, with Mohamed defeating his Republican opponent Mike Rogers.
