Minister of Communications Discusses with World Bank Support for Digital Transformation
Syrian Minister of Communications discusses digital transformation support and financial grant with World Bank officials in Seoul.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Hekal met in Seoul with World Bank leaders to discuss the Syrian proposal to support the digital transformation program, which includes the required financial grant and necessary technical assistance to implement its priorities.

The Ministry stated via its Telegram channel on Wednesday that the meetings, held in Seoul during the Global Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization, included Anna Bjerde, Managing Director for Operations at the World Bank, Sangbo Kim, Global Vice President for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence at the World Bank Group, and the Bank’s team for the Middle East and North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan region, led by Regional Vice President Ousmane Diouf.

Agreement on Visit by High-Level Delegation

Minister Hekal and World Bank Group officials agreed on a visit by a high-level delegation from the Group to Syria next month to follow up on the necessary technical and procedural steps to secure the required technical and financial resources for national digital transformation, within the cooperation program supervised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

The Ministry clarified that this path comes as part of its plan to build the digital foundations of the new Syria, by developing infrastructure and digital government services, improving institutional efficiency, and simplifying procedures to save citizens' time and reduce the cost of accessing services, while enabling cooperation with the World Bank to leverage its expertise and financial tools to accelerate the implementation of these priorities.

Building a Syrian Technology Industry

The Ministry links the development of services to building a Syrian technology industry capable of growth and competition, by developing skills, expanding opportunities for young men and women in employment and entrepreneurship, and enabling Syrian companies to contribute to developing digital solutions and accessing new markets.

The Global Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization is being held in Seoul from October 19 to 22, organized by the World Bank in partnership with Korean entities, to discuss the role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in enhancing productivity, creating jobs, and expanding access to services.
