Ministers of Transport and Health Discuss Enhancing Cooperation in Road Safety
The ministers met with the Roads for Life Association to develop training and first aid programs to reduce road accident fatalities.

The Ministers of Transport, Yara Bader, and Health, Mousab Al-Ali, met with the president of the Roads for Life Association, Zina Qassar, and her accompanying delegation, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the field of road safety, first aid, and rescue, and to develop training and qualification programs for personnel involved in responding to traffic accidents, thereby contributing to reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from them.

The Minister of Transport emphasized during the meeting, held yesterday Tuesday at the Ministry building in Damascus, the importance of enhancing joint cooperation in road safety, first aid, and rescue, and developing training programs targeting groups most connected to transport movement and accident response. This aims to spread road safety culture and improve efficiency in handling emergencies, alongside qualifying specialized personnel and enhancing their readiness.

For his part, the Minister of Health emphasized the importance of integrating efforts with the Ministry of Transport and relevant civil associations to develop the accident response system. He noted that preventing injuries and providing correct first aid contribute to saving lives and reducing pressure on health institutions, amid challenges related to the availability of beds and intensive care equipment.

Al-Ali clarified that cooperation between the two ministries included joint discussions on traffic and road safety laws, highlighting the importance of moving from coordination to sustainable implementation steps, including training personnel, spreading first aid culture, and enhancing the readiness of accident responders.

The meeting also addressed the importance of enhancing coordination among relevant parties at different stages of accident response, starting from providing first aid at the accident site, through transporting the injured, to emergency departments and providing necessary medical care, while benefiting from the expertise of relevant associations and expanding their participation in training and awareness.

Participants also focused on the necessity of establishing a unified number for receiving reports and facilitating access to help for the injured, with discussions on the aspects related to this mechanism to be completed in coordination between the relevant parties.

Attending the meeting were Transport Affairs Advisor for Sustainable Transport, Sinaan Al-Khair, and Director of the Vehicle Licensing Department, Muhammad Al-Aloush. From the Ministry of Health, Emergency and Ambulance Director Najib Al-Na’san, and Emergency Health Center Director Abdul Hakim Ramadan were present.

It is worth noting that the Roads for Life Association was established in Beirut in 2011. It is a non-profit association aiming to improve the survival chances of traffic accident victims by training medical and ambulance personnel on the latest methods of patient care, and enhancing cooperation with medical and official authorities to develop responses to traffic accidents and reduce resulting fatalities.
