Ministry of Agriculture: Syrian olive oil meets global standards
Report on the quality and chemical properties of Syrian olive oil competing with global products despite export challenges.

The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that Syrian olive oil enjoys a prestigious reputation in local and foreign markets, supported by its unique chemical properties and rich genetic diversity, making it a strong competitor on the global stage despite export challenges.

For his part, Muhammad Qawas, director of the Olive Office at the Ministry, clarified that Syria is one of the oldest olive-growing regions in the Mediterranean basin, and local varieties such as Sourani and Qaisi are characterized by an oleic acid percentage reaching around 70% or more, which gives them high oxidative stability. They also contain phenolic compounds and tocopherols that enhance their nutritional value.

Qawas added that proper production meets the standards of extra virgin oil in terms of low acidity and peroxide number. Meanwhile, Safwan Qayrouz, a production company director, pointed out that targeted markets include Gulf countries, Europe, and Turkey, noting that the sector suffered a near-total cutoff from the world for 14 years due to sanctions.

Qayrouz emphasized that olive oil from the Idlib and Afrin regions possesses a unique flavor comparable to Spanish and Tunisian oils, calling for government support and the conclusion of reciprocal contracts. The Ministry estimated the expected initial production at approximately 954,730 tons, with 80% allocated for milling to produce around 190,946 tons of oil.
