Saudi writer and poet Mohammed Al-Ali, considered one of the pioneers of modernist writers and poets in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has died. Al-Ali was born in 1932 in Al-Amran within Al-Ahsa Governorate, where he grew up under his father's care and received the basics of reading and writing. He completed memorizing the Holy Quran in traditional schools before moving with his father to Najaf in Iraq to study religious sciences.
In the same context, Al-Ali completed his education in the intermediate and secondary stages, then enrolled in the Faculty of Jurisprudence at the University of Baghdad, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in 1962. After returning to his hometown of Al-Ahsa in 1964, he began his professional career as a teacher at Dammam Secondary School for three years, before moving to work in the education administration.
On his part, Al-Ali continued in the field of education for nineteen years. He served as editor-in-chief of "Al-Yawm" newspaper for two years and worked as an educational supervisor at the Royal Commission in Jubail from 1986 to 1993. He has also been writing a cultural column titled "Waqufan Biha" in Al-Yamamah magazine for years, reflecting his continuous cultural presence.
Sources added that Al-Ali published many literary and critical works, including "Watery Words," "No Water in Water," "Sorrows of Light," "The Lesson of the Sea and the Growth of Concepts: Questions and Opinions on Existence and Values," "The Impossible Well: Attempts to Transcend the Mainstream in Culture and Society," "Olympic Rings: Articles on Enlightenment and Modernism Issues," and "No One in the House."
It was noted that Al-Ali was honored in 2015 by naming the first edition of the poetry festival launched by "Bayt Al-Shi'r" (Poetry House) affiliated with the Dammam Association of Culture and Arts after him. A book titled "That Blue Which Taught Us the Anthems" was published on the occasion of his honor, containing testimonies from friends and writers. He also won the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Global Award in its fourth season in 2022 in the "Poetic Experience" branch for his entire poetic works.
