Omar Mahmoud Benjelloun, a leader in Morocco's "Left Alliance," called on the new government, headed by Fatima Zahra Mansouri, to achieve a fair distribution of wealth and strengthen national sovereignty in the fields of food and energy. This came in an interview with Anadolu Agency, where Benjelloun outlined the opposition's views and demands regarding the government program presented by the ministry.
In the same context, Benjelloun criticized what he described as "impromptu statistics and figures" contained in the program, emphasizing the necessity of achieving self-sufficiency in food and strengthening local production, particularly the agricultural sector. He pointed out that the government's controlled capitalist approach is rejected by the opposition and public opinion, given Morocco's heavy reliance on importing more than 94 percent of its energy needs.
For his part, Benjelloun focused on the importance of reforming the economic and rights-based aspects, calling for a review of laws that sparked widespread controversy, such as the Lawyers Law and the Press Council Law. The years 2025 and 2026 saw a crisis between the Ministry of Justice and lawyers lasting six months due to their rejection of provisions regulating the profession, which they believe infringe upon its independence.
He added that judicial reform is not merely a technical measure, but an integrated system to ensure judicial security and civil stability. In response, Mansouri pledged to work on bringing justice closer to citizens through an modernization program that ensures fair access to the judiciary and legal security, while committing to raise social support for poor families to $60 per month by 2027.
