Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid manager, clarified that if he were in Vinicius Junior's position, he would have left the club last summer in search of respectful stadiums and a competitive league. Mourinho told journalists before the match against Sevilla on Sunday: "If I were in his place, perhaps I wouldn't have stayed here last summer; I would have forced a move to a league and country where there are competitive clubs and stadiums that respect me."
In the same vein, the Portuguese manager praised the player's character, saying: "An amazing boy who is easy to build a good relationship with, a wonderful person, and he has all my respect, because he continues to live and stand firm and still keeps his smile." He added that Vinicius renewed his contract until 2032 because he loves the club and the city and believes things will improve, noting that no one can negatively influence his joy in life and work.
For his part, Vinicius was sent off against Villarreal for pulling an opponent's hair, resulting in a four-match ban and his absence from the Clásico against Barcelona on October 25. Real Madrid faces Sevilla on Sunday, hoping not to fall further behind league leaders Barcelona, who play on Saturday.
Mourinho expressed his happiness that the punishment was limited to four matches, considering that hidden figures in the disciplinary committee would have increased the sanction. He also held referees responsible for some results, calling for the president of the league association to resign.
