Russia and Ukraine continue mutual attacks using drones and missiles, as diplomatic efforts to settle the war persist, following a meeting between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg.
Damages and injuries in Moscow
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that Russian air defenses shot down 163 drones approaching the capital during an attack on the Moscow region from Wednesday evening until Thursday dawn, resulting in two injuries. Sobyanin stated in posts on his Telegram channel that 630 drones headed toward the Moscow region between 8:30 PM on October 21 and 4:00 AM the following day, clarifying that most were shot down at long distances, while 163 were neutralized upon approaching the capital.
He added that two people were injured in the Voronovo area of the New Moscow Administrative Okrug, noting that necessary assistance was provided to them, while emergency teams continued working at sites where drone debris fell.
Kyiv targeted by missiles
For its part, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Wednesday evening that a woman was injured by a ballistic missile attack targeting the capital. Klitschko explained in posts on his Telegram channel that the attack damaged a car repair workshop and two residential buildings in the Dniprovskyi district, noting the possibility of people trapped under the rubble of one building, as well as shrapnel falling near a fuel station, while medical teams transported the injured woman to the hospital.
Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters amid the ongoing attack.
Diplomatic moves to end the war
These developments follow a meeting held on Wednesday in Saint Petersburg between US envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which US President Donald Trump stated that reaching a settlement for the war in Ukraine was "closer than ever."
The meeting was preceded by a Tuesday gathering in Oslo, attended by Witkoff, European leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who called for a ceasefire along current contact lines as a first step toward negotiations.
The United Nations confirmed on October 8 that attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war constitute violations of international humanitarian law, calling for an end to them and for the protection of civilians and essential facilities and services.
