Postponement of Political Decisions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed security and administrative arrangements concerning the future of the Gaza Strip until after the Israeli elections scheduled for Tuesday, including the entry of an international force and a sector management committee, according to Israeli media. The Israeli Broadcasting Authority, in its Arabic version "Makan", reported on Sunday that Netanyahu ordered the postponement of the travel of approximately 7,000 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt to train for work within a police force to be formed in the sector, despite the approval of the Israeli General Security Service "Shabak" of their names.
Infrastructure Projects and the National Committee
The Authority clarified that the decision comes as part of "a series of steps concerning the future of the Gaza Strip that the Israeli political level has postponed until after the elections". It pointed out that the postponed steps also include preparations for building the new Rafah city, the entry of the International Stabilization Force into the sector, and the arrival of the National Committee for the Management of Gaza. The name "New Rafah" or "Green Rafah" is given to a project to establish a residential settlement for Palestinians east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, in an area occupied by the Israeli army behind the "Yellow Line", as part of American plans to rebuild the sector.
Details of the Committee and Council
The "National Committee for the Management of Gaza", chaired by Palestinian Ali Shu'ath, is a non-political Palestinian body of technocrats, formed to manage civil affairs, public services, and internal security in the sector during the transitional phase, under international supervision. Its work begins in Egypt in January 2026, while it has not yet started its work inside Gaza. The "Peace Council" is an international organization established at the initiative of US President Donald Trump in January 2026, chaired by him, and focuses in its first phase on implementing his plan regarding the Gaza Strip.
Military and Legal Context
Sources suggested that the postponement may be due to the fact that steps to rebuild Gaza and train Palestinians from the sector in Egypt "do not serve Netanyahu's political interests at present". Since October 2023, Israel has waged a war of genocide on the Gaza Strip, resulting in more than 74,000 killed and over 175,000 injured Palestinians, and massive destruction affecting 90 percent of civil infrastructure.
