Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewed his rejection of the establishment of a Palestinian state and called for the overthrow of the ruling regime in Iran, in statements he made on Tuesday evening to Israeli Channel 14. Netanyahu affirmed that the area which was supposed to become a Palestinian state would not become one, noting that Israel would not allow it.
Electoral and Political Context
Netanyahu's statements come amid Israel's preparations for general elections on October 27, where opinion polls show that neither Netanyahu's camp nor the Jewish opposition is winning a majority to form a government. Netanyahu described the opposition's position as leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state and withdrawal from Lebanon and Gaza, while ruling coalition and opposition parties affirm their rejection of a Palestinian state.
Regional Tensions and Nuclear Issues
Netanyahu stressed the necessity of overthrowing the Iranian regime to stop its pursuit of reviving its nuclear program and destroying Israel again, noting that this regime seeks to rebuild Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel launched two wars against Iran in February and June 2025, while Iran rejects accusations of possessing a military nuclear program and affirms the peaceful nature of its program.
International Recognition and Israeli Support
Netanyahu clarified that many countries in the Middle East and the West are seeking assistance from Israel, noting that some of their representatives left the hall during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In contrast, 160 countries recognize the state of Palestine, while the United States uses its veto power in the Security Council to prevent full Palestinian membership.
