OpenAI is updating the desktop ChatGPT application by integrating the "Chat" and "Work" tabs into a new unified interface. This update aims to enable users to seamlessly transition from asking questions and exchanging ideas to executing tasks and completing projects within a single, integrated experience.
The tech website TechCrunch reported on Tuesday that the company notified users via email that the new interface is available in the first phase to a limited group. This is intended to collect feedback and utilize it to improve the experience before expanding the rollout more broadly.
The update allows users to move from exploring ideas to executing them directly, with the ability to import files and use extensions. It also enables requests to create websites, design presentations, and perform online tasks, while retaining the ability to review results and guide the system through work stages.
The company clarified that the "Codex" tool will remain a standalone experience within the desktop ChatGPT application, despite the integration of the chat and work interfaces. The update also includes unifying the token credits dedicated for using "ChatGPT" and "Codex," as both applications rely on a shared credit balance.
The company indicated that this change will not affect most users, but it may increase wait times for resetting credits for some, depending on usage levels and the model used. This step comes amid a trend among artificial intelligence companies to develop platforms that combine conversation and task execution.
In the same context, Anthropic preceded this by integrating chat and work functions into a single interface within its "Claude" assistant last September, reflecting the growing competition in this technical field.
