Damascus Directorate of Culture opens a market in Al-Salihiya displaying diverse student artworks and handicrafts.

The Damascus Directorate of Culture opened a market on Al-Salihiya Street in Damascus today, Sunday, where students of the Popular Culture Institute showcased their artistic and craft works under the title "Creative Hands." The market's events are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, as part of a cultural initiative aimed at highlighting youth talents.

Diversity of Works Between Art and Handicrafts

The market features a variety of works including handicrafts and paintings. Some paintings depicted the historic streets of old Damascus, while others featured Arabic calligraphy inscribing Quranic verses, and still others portrayed still life. The handicrafts were distinguished by recycling fabric scraps and unusable materials to transform them into children's bags and clothing, combining creativity with practical utility.

Institute Regains Activity and Opens Doors to Talents

Mahmoud Maadnali, head of the Cultural Relations Department at the Damascus Directorate of Culture, explained that the market is held under the supervision and patronage of the Directorate and organized by the Popular Culture Institute in Al-Salihiya. He noted that the goal is to display trainees' products, encourage attracting youth talents, and generate profit that contributes to turning their projects into a real source of livelihood.

Maadnali emphasized that the institute's doors remain open to all young men and women for training in various specialties, with future plans to expand these activities to other neighborhoods in Damascus. For her part, the institute's director, Samaah Azoo, clarified that the institute is resuming activity after a period of stagnation, focusing on organizing training courses covering the art department, computer science, and languages.

Artistic Participation Reflecting Heritage and Seasons

For her part, visual artist Hiba Qasim Amrir spoke about her participation with several paintings depicting the lantern as a symbol of heritage and pomegranate fruit, using warm colors to indicate the farewell of summer and the arrival of winter. It is worth noting that the Popular Culture Institute in Al-Salihiya was established in 1960 and falls under the Damascus Directorate of Culture, offering diverse educational and artistic courses attracting children over the age of seven and adults as well.
