The National Transitional Justice Authority, in cooperation with the Global Survivors Fund (GSF) and relevant authorities, opened on Thursday a recovery center in the city of Homs, the first of its kind in Syria. The center aims to provide legal, psychological, and social support to victims of violations and rights holders, helping them identify their needs and access appropriate services.
In this context, a meeting was held at the Authority’s headquarters in the Karim al-Louz district of Homs to introduce the center’s objectives, operational mechanisms, and services. The discussion also covered ways to enhance coordination between the Authority, official bodies, donor organizations, and the local community, contributing to meeting victims’ needs and ensuring the continuity of provided services.
Yasmeen Mushaan, a member of the National Transitional Justice Authority, told SANA that the center provides a safe space for victims to obtain legal, psychological, and social support, alongside peer support. She noted that Homs was chosen to host the center due to its location, which connects people from different Syrian regions, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts to build a future based on justice and respect for rights.
For her part, Hiba Al-Sweid, head of the Authority’s centers for reparations and community recovery, stated that the center receives victims, identifies their needs, and refers them to appropriate services through a referral system. Direct services include a legal clinic and a psychological and social support office, in addition to a programs department addressing needs in education, health, and medicine.
Esther Dinkelman, President of the Global Survivors Fund, confirmed that the Fund works in Syria in coordination with the National Transitional Justice Authority to ensure victims receive reparations and compensation. Dinkelman viewed the opening of the center as a first step toward providing a dedicated space for victim recovery, noting that the current phase allows for enhanced cooperation between the Authority, civil society organizations, and the victims themselves.
The opening of the center comes within the framework of efforts aimed at supporting victims of violations and helping them access their rights and necessary services for recovery. Coordination between official institutions, donor organizations, and the local community remains a key factor in sustaining and developing these services.
